IPS Praveen Sood: Who is IPS officer Praveen Sood, appointed as the new director of CBI

Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood has been appointed as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He will remain in this post for two years. Sood is a 1986 batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre. He can take over his charge on May 25. He will succeed Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, whose term ends on May 25. He was appointed as the Director General of Police of the state only three years ago.

IPS Praveen Sood is originally from Himachal Pradesh

An engineering graduate from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Sood is originally from Himachal Pradesh. He was to retire in May 2024, but will now get a fixed tenure of two years and will continue in the post at least till May 2025. Sood was appointed Karnataka DGP in 2020, superseding 1985 batch IPS officer Ashit Mohan Prasad.

Appointed as Police Commissioner in 2004

It is known that Praveen Sood, a Karnataka cadre officer, was appointed as the Commissioner of Police of Mysore City in the year 2004. During this, he served here till the year 2007. However, he later took over as the Commissioner of Police, in Bengaluru City. He did many important things during this time but is best known for introducing “Namma 100”, an emergency response system for citizens in distress. As the Commissioner of Police, in Bengaluru City, she started Pink Hoyasala, exclusively for women and children in distress, which is managed entirely by women police personnel.

 

Have given their services in Home Department

Prior to taking over as the Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) of Bengaluru City, he had served as the Superintendent of Police in Bellary and Raichur. Sood has also served as the Principal Secretary of the Karnataka Home Department.

When there was an allegation of supporting the BJP

It is known that Sood has been accused of supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar accused Sood of supporting the BJP government in the state. During this, he came into the headlines. Shivakumar had accused him on March 15 this year, saying that Sood was protecting BJP leaders while targeting Congress leaders through legal proceedings. During this, Shivakumar demanded action against Sood and his arrest.
