The art exhibition Equus & Other Stories by artist M. Narayan, curated by Uma Nair, was inaugurated today at the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA), Bikaner House, New Delhi, by Amitabh Kant. The exhibition, open from March 1 to March 9, 2025, provides a compelling insight into Narayan’s creative evolution, reflecting his artistic journey of over forty years.
Bringing together three distinct series, the exhibition highlights Narayan’s deep-rooted connection to movement, tradition, and cultural heritage. The Equus Series, inspired by his fascination with horses and polo, features bold strokes, expressive charcoal lines, and vivid colors that convey the raw power and grace of galloping horses. The Kerala Series, influenced by Narayan’s travels, offers an intricate portrayal of Kathakali and Theyyam, capturing the dramatic intensity of these traditional performances. Meanwhile, the Karnataka Series pays homage to Narayan’s home state, illustrating rural life, rituals, and revered figures like Kempamma Devi through a mix of monochrome and color.
At the opening, Narayan reflected on his artistic approach, stating, “I feel that artists are both insiders as well as outsiders. As an artist, I am an observer as well as a participant. My forms of life are grounded in the game of the moment and the love that humans have for the beauty of horses. The relationship between the horses and the riders has always fascinated me.” Curator Uma Nair remarked, “Narayan’s works transport us into a world where movement meets stillness, and tradition merges with modernity. His ability to infuse his subjects with life and emotion makes this exhibition a truly immersive experience.”
The opening event attracted art lovers, collectors, and critics who admired Narayan’s skillful storytelling through his visually compelling compositions. Equus & Other Stories will be on display until March 9, 2025, at CCA, Bikaner House, Pandara Road, New Delhi, inviting visitors to engage with the artist’s passionate and poetic vision.
