New Delhi: The weather in Delhi-NCR took an unexpected turn on Sunday evening as light rain was recorded across various areas. This sudden spell of rain led to a noticeable increase in cold. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the chill is likely to intensify in the coming days, with a cold wave forecast for different parts of the country. On the brighter side, the rainfall is expected to reduce pollution levels, offering some relief to residents.
Rainfall Recorded Across Delhi-NCR
Several areas in Delhi, including Akbar Road, Pandara Park, and Kota House, witnessed light rain. Similarly, regions in the NCR, such as Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad, also experienced rainfall. This weather change has caused a dip in temperature, with predictions of further drops in the coming days.
IMD: Rain Triggered by Western Disturbance
The IMD attributed the rainfall to a western disturbance over central Pakistan and adjoining areas. The department had earlier forecast light to moderate rain in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR from Sunday through the next two days. IMD scientist Naresh Kumar confirmed the prediction, stating, “The western disturbance in central Pakistan has caused light rain, with similar conditions expected in the Himalayas, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR today and tomorrow.”
Temperature Dip and Cold Wave Warning
Post-rainfall, temperatures in Delhi-NCR are anticipated to drop significantly, with a cold wave expected to grip North India. The IMD predicts a gradual decrease in temperatures starting December 9. The cold wave is likely to affect Rajasthan first, followed by Punjab and Haryana. Between December 9 and December 14, western Rajasthan is expected to experience severe cold wave conditions, with similar weather spreading to Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh from December 11.
Dense Fog Alert for Several States
The IMD has also issued a dense fog warning for several regions over the next few days:
- Punjab and Haryana: Until December 10
- Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura: Till December 11
- Bihar: December 9-11
- Himachal Pradesh: December 10-12
- Uttar Pradesh: December 10-13
Residents are advised to prepare for colder temperatures and limited visibility due to dense fog in the affected areas.
