AI and UPI Join Forces to Empower Farmers with Hassle-Free Loans

In view of the rising inflation and agricultural costs, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to increase the limit of loans given to small farmers without collateral. On Friday, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said that now small farmers will be able to take loans up to Rs 2 lakh without any collateral. Currently this limit is Rs 1.6 lakh. From the new year, all banks will have to follow this instruction of RBI.

Loans Will Be Easily Available In Villages Also

Now Small Finance Banks (SFBs) will be able to give loans through UPI. The advantage of this will be that even in villages, villagers will be able to get loans easily through UPI. SFB has more reach in villages. SFB did not have this facility yet. According to RBI, the limit of loan without collateral for farmers from the year 2019 was Rs 1.6 lakh. Before that this limit was Rs one lakh.

Plan To Improve The Performance Of The Agriculture Sector

This decision of RBI related to the benefit of crores of farmers is also important because the performance of agriculture should be better in any case to strengthen the GDP growth rate in the current financial year. In the second quarter of the current financial year, the agriculture sector grew by 3.5 percent while the growth rate of manufacturing was two percent. Rural demand depends on a good crop and GDP can be expected to strengthen in the third and fourth quarters only with the increase in rural demand.

AI Based Solution To Prevent Digital Fraud

The RBI governor said that the Reserve Bank is continuously making efforts in collaboration with other banks to prevent digital and cyber fraud. In this direction, the use of AI has been started to detect mule accounts. Das said that mule accounts are used for cyber fraud. The amount of fraud comes in the mule account only. Cyber fraud can be reduced significantly if it is identified in banks.

Work On Mule Account Started In Two Big Banks

Competitions are being organised continuously for MuleHunter Solution to detect mule accounts. Reserve Bank Innovation Hub and banks are working together in this direction. Work to identify mule accounts with the help of AI has started in two big banks.

Over 13 Lakh Victims of UPI Fraud in 2023-24 Alone

The surge in internet and smartphone usage has led to a rapid increase in digital payments across India, with Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions gaining immense popularity. However, this growth has been accompanied by a concerning rise in digital payment fraud. According to the Finance Ministry, in the financial year 2024-25 alone, over 6.32 lakh cases of UPI fraud were reported, resulting in losses amounting to Rs 485 crore. These figures, updated till September, paint a troubling picture.

Looking at a broader timeline, from 2022-23 to the present, over 27 lakh fraud cases have been recorded, leading to a cumulative loss of Rs 2,145 crore. In the financial year 2023-24 alone, more than 13 lakh people fell victim to such frauds, incurring losses of Rs 1,087 crore. A Digital Crime (DC) report attributes this alarming increase to the growing number of UPI users and the surge in real-time payment transactions.

In response, the Finance Ministry emphasized the need for India to balance the promotion of fintech innovation with strict regulatory compliance to curb fraud. As one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing fintech markets, India aims to maintain its momentum in advancing financial inclusion while addressing vulnerabilities in the system.

Highlighting an 85% increase in UPI fraud cases this financial year, the Ministry stressed the importance of financial literacy for all age groups. It also called for enhanced regulatory measures to counter emerging threats like data breaches and financial scams, ensuring robust safeguards against these challenges.

Jio’s Third Major Technology in the Portfolio

Jio has already been offering Jio Fiber broadband and Jio Air Fiber services, both of which enhance internet connectivity. At the Indian Mobile Congress 2023, Jio launched its Jio Air Fiber service, connecting four remote locations across the country using this technology. These locations include Gir National Park in Gujarat, Korba in Chhattisgarh, Nabarangpur in Odisha, and ONGC Jorhat in Assam. Following Jio Fiber and Jio Air Fiber, Jio Space Fiber is now being introduced as the third major technology in Jio’s portfolio.

What Is Jio Space Fiber?

Jio Space Fiber will use SIS company’s satellites to deliver broadband connectivity, providing multi-gigabit connectivity anywhere and anytime. This is a satellite-based internet service that leverages innovative and advanced NGSO (Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit) technology to extend connectivity to remote areas. At the Indian Mobile Congress, Akash Ambani demonstrated this service to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This service operates similarly to Starlink by Elon Musk, offering internet access via satellites. It will bring high-speed internet to areas where traditional broadband and air fiber are not readily available.

Pricing for Jio Space Fiber

Aakash Ambani, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, stated that Jio has provided broadband internet access to millions of homes and businesses for the first time in the country. Jio Space Fiber aims to do the same. It will connect every aspect of life, from online government services, education, healthcare, to entertainment, with Jio Space Fiber. However, specific information regarding when this service will be available to the general public and its pricing has not been disclosed. It has only been mentioned that Jio will make internet connectivity available to users at affordable prices.
