For the past few weeks, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have been in action regarding unclaimed deposits. RBI has encouraged banks to publish the list of unclaimed deposits and inoperative accounts in this regard.
A deposit is considered unclaimed deposit or unclaimed when there is no activity, such as deposit or withdrawal, for ten years or more. In this case, you need to know how an account holder can claim money from unclaimed deposits and how a nominee or legal heir can claim unclaimed deposits after the death of the depositor.
How can account holders claim money in unclaimed deposits?
If you also wish to claim money from unclaimed deposits, you will need to visit the branch where you have your account and submit all available account information (passbook/ Statement of account to be submitted along with Fixed Deposit/Special Fixed Deposit Receipt).
Apart from this, recent photographs and valid identity and address proof documents (KYC documents) will also have to be submitted.
How can the nominee claim after the death of the depositor?
According to the Bank of Maharashtra website, for the claim process, the legal heir/nominee has to visit the branch and submit the duly filled and signed Unclaimed Deposit Claim Form along with the following documents. Documents include passbook / fixed deposit / special fixed deposit receipt, valid identity proof of the claimant, copy of death certificate of the account holder.

If you want to claim in Canara Bank, then you can go to the https://canarabank.com/Unclaimed-Deposit.aspx link, enter your name, city and click on the search option to find out the unclaimed account. Apart from this, the nominee can claim by visiting the branch of the bank with the necessary documents.
